Teaching, Making – and Change: 2018-21

Whew, how fast has the recent time gone… overdue for an update.

So, the ‘bit of teaching’ in Spring 2018 at Dundee University, initially ran until the end of semester – when I went off to spend the Summer working at the wonderful Scottish National Portrait Gallery, until returning in the Autumn, to teach at Dundee almost full-time. This, which included engaged arts process and theory, became two years of a very satisfying and intense experience, when the time simply seemed to run away with itself!

But art making still went on, whenever possible…

World Community Development Conference artwork: In June of 2019, I was fortunate to join the team which planned this event, hosted at Dundee University, for amazing delegates from all over the globe.

Over the three days of the event I had the extraordinary opportunity to use the ‘pockets’ process, to create a collective artwork with all who wanted to contribute. A couple of images:

And the same section, but no longer in silhouette:

The work acted as a point of contact, a kind of collective conversation and a reflection of the life of the event, offering a collective expression of individual responses – a snapshot of the people taking part.

I have also continued to progress the ‘Moving Through’ strand of work, whenever possible – here are some recent developments:

This is an early attempt, from late 2020, at an approximately half-sized section of work, shown standing on the floor and wall-hung – this represents one of  what will eventually be a series of interrelated pieces, to be flexibly installed as a site-responsive work / series of works. I intend to experiment with different materials to make these, and then explore the potential of  the full-sized pieces, in a series of indoor and outdoor contexts:

I really enjoy how this sits independently and contrasts with the stone flagged floor…

Here it is, as a wall-hung piece:

And recently, from January 2021, a small (30x30cm) exhibition-piece from the series:

Final note:

a big change is now underway for me, when I will have significantly more time to work directly on artwork, so I hope to reflect that, here… fingers crossed and watch this space.
